The thin kit smiled, raising her tail, "Maybe we can go find him! He'll be super happy to see you!" SootKit mewed, running around her mother, the happiest she'd ever been in her life. She stumbled a bit from the snow, but quickly got back up and went back to limp running, a big smile on her face.

VipernoseThe tabby's smile only widened more and more as her eyes followed her daughter as the small ball of fur leaped through the snow.
"Maybe we can! Let's do that! If it'll make you happy!" Vipernose purred. She loved seeing her daughter so happy. The molly realized that this was the first time she had ever seen Sootkit not looking miserable.
Her kit may have lead a very rough life up to this moment, yes, but it all surely paid off for her, right? Vipernose couldn't help but think that the world hadn't been as gracious when it came to her own life... StarClan never paid for what they had done to her, and the deputy had given up hope that that would ever happen.
She smirked down at her kit. "Well," she said, raising a brow. "Lead the way to where you think he might be, Sootkit!"

"Umm..." the small tabby paused her running as she looked around, ears pricked as she started to walk one way, pause, and turn the other way. "I.. uh..." she floofed, starting to bound off, "I bet he's this way!" she mewed determinedly, smiling as she hopped through the snow

Vipernose Vipernose almost laughed aloud as she watched Sootkit confuse herself multiple times... As she moved this way and that in the snow. She didn't mind it, though. She knew if she had pointed out the fact that Sootkit obviously didn't know where Ravenfoot was, her kit would've been extremely put down.
So Vipernose just sat and watched as the small feline made up her mind on which way to go, and followed after her when she began to make her way through the snow to where she believed her father would be.
If the tabby was honest with herself, she was scared to death to see Ravenfoot. There was no doubt he'd have more scratches and scars from the last time she had seen him, and that was her least favorite thing in the whole world. Seeing her mate in his mangled up state made her sad and afraid. She always felt like it was her fault... If she hadn't fallen in love with him, he would probably still be in one perfect piece.
But of course Vipernose had to fall muzzle-over-paws for Ravenfoot. Of course her ancestors would decide to screw up her mate.
That was just her luck.

It took a short while, but finally RavenFoot was found. He sat all alone, a ways from the group, just sitting calmly in the snow. He didn't move, his head leaned back and his eyes closed as he sat, finding peace in the dangerous silence of the woods. He didn't even move when Sootkit mewed for him, "Dad!" she squeaked, "Look whose here!"
"That's nice' he murmured simply, not realizing ViperNose was there, he hadn't bothered to look yet. He turned and looked over, one of his eyes hollow, just a socket. Again, he made little movement, "Oh, ViperNose" he said, a smile forming on his lips, "What brings you here?"

VipernoseVipernose's ears flattened at the sight of Ravenfoot. He was scarred and broken, and it was all her fault. Mates were supposed to make each other happy, but she had just made his life worse.
When he turned and smiled at her, her heart sank to her paws and she held her breath. In their early days, they would've been all over each other, overly excited to see each other. Now, it was like they had never known each other... Like they had never talked to each other in their lives.
And she hated it. She hated it all. She didn't want to stare hopelessly into the hollow where his eye once was. She didn't want him to feel alone anymore. She didn't want him to be like this any longer.
She had to make things right between their family. This wasn't healthy for any of them, and she was the one who needed to fix it. "Ravenfoot," she breathed. "I know I say these two things more than I should, but I love you, and I'm so sorry." It was a weak apology for everything she had done, but it was all she had.
"Sootkit brought me to you. She told me that you've been hunting for foxes." The tabby's eyes were sad, her tail drooping behind her.

For a moment the patched tom cat was quiet, his eyes searching her. He didn't budge when SootKit nuzzled up to his belly, purring and cuddling close. Almost subconsciously, RavenFoot closed his eye to hide the empty socket, his soft voice full of emotion, "It's alright..." he murmured, "ViperNose... it doesn't help to say sorry for things you didn't do..."

VipernoseShe didn't flinch under his stare. She didn't move until he closed his eye, her ears flattening and her own eyes filling with tears. She couldn't cry in front of her daughter. She had to be strong.
"You need to stop taking the blame for everything, Ravenfoot." she said sadly. "Not everything is always your fault. A lot of things that have happened in your life are someone else's fault. You doubt yourself too much... You shouldn't."
Vipernose wanted to move toward him, to sink into his embrace. But she couldn't. She had to sort this out with him for the last time. Their relationship was unhealthy for Sootkit, and they needed to cure it.

RavenFoot put his paw around Sootkit, pulling her close to him as his voice grew a little more stern, "I could say the same to you, Viper. You need to stop blaming yourself for what's wrong with.." he trailed off for a moment, "With us." SootKit looked back at her mother, a hint of worry in her eyes at their conversation as the speckled tom cat continued, "It's no one's fault for most of these things that've happened between us, although I do plan to boast that us becoming mates was all me" he gave a small smile, thinking of all the feathers he had given her as gifts. What lousy presents

VipernoseVipernose’s ears flattened slightly at his comment. She didn’t like it. She was tired of always being in a conflict with Ravenfoot. She just wanted to be happy. Was that too much to ask? Of course it is, she told herself. This is you we’re talking about.
His next words brought a new light to the molly’s thoughts… Maybe it wasn’t either of their faults. Maybe this was what was supposed to happen all along. Destiny wasn’t something that could be changed.
Vipernose laughed, happy that he was trying to uplift the mood. “You have a point there, Ravenfoot.” She stepped closer so that they were only a small amount of space apart. Vipernose looked down at Sootkit and smiled, then trailed her gaze back up to her mate, her smile widening. “I love you two so much.”

The patched tom cat gently touched his nose to ViperNose's, a low purr ringing from his chest as he gave her lips a light lick of love. SootKit covered her mouth with a paw, suppressing a giggle as she watched, "Eeewww" she tried to hide her teasing grin, leaning back to snuggle up in her mother's fluff. It had been a long time since she'd seen either of her parents smile, and she intended to milk it as much as she could
