death doesn't discriminate
It had been a few weeks since the ambush on the clans and the toll on the cats was obvious. Her own wound had been physical not psychological and was slowly healing. The skin was slowly knitting together, only small amounts of pus oozing from it. Considering the lack of herbs and healers Fern felt lucky it was healing as fast as it was.
The wound still sucked all her energy though and when the clans stopped for a rest she lay down, pressing her warm scab against the cold snow. In seconds her head had rested on her thick paws and she had drifted into an uneasy sleep. _________________________________________________ She had been tossing and turning so much she had awoken, her green eyes murky with sleep. It had taken a few heart beats to realise she wasn’t in the snow-leaden clearing, but in a clearing with bushes heavy with berries. ”Like what you see, sister?” The taunting purr that came from behind her had her swinging up and around onto her feet. ”Oh you know she prefers my looks much more than yours” A voice that sounded identical to the one before came from behind her once again and she spun around once more. ”Mamba?” the words fell from her dark lips, the name like a dream. ”The first tom slunk around her, a lazy smile twisted on his handsome features. ”Cobra” it was all she could manage for now and she took in the flickering forms of her kin. Both were golden, Mamba with dark tabby markings, Cobra with dark tabby markings accented with white. They took after their stunning mother, while she took after their darkly furred father. ”Why am I here?” her voice was rough, emotions shoving into each other and confusing her. ”Oh how delightful! I thought you’d be cuddling up to us, asking us how we’ve been!” Cobra cackled, shaking his burnished head. ”And I thought you’d be asking if you died, you were always the weakest of us-don’t give me that look, it’s a compliment” Mamba purred, that horribly dark smile on his features. ”We have spent the past few moons being good boys, so we could give you this message… You see sissy, you have always been destined for greatness. The old leaders saw that brightness in you, knew you were someone who was devoted fully to her clan” ”Oh brother, stop teasing her, what he’s trying to say is that you are to be Shadowclans medicine cat” Fern had been glancing between them, the casual conversation. They were at ease, like nothing happened. It baffled her enough that it took her several moments to actually process what they were saying. ”I am-I am to be the medicine cat?” her lips purred together, looking at them with raised bows. ”I know nothing of healing, I ca-“ She was cut off by Mamba, who snorted ”Why else do you think we are here, sister? Cobra, show her” Her brother nodded before padding over, his own green eyes, speckled with stars, locking with hers. ”We have learnt lots, living up here, sister, and we are to give you what we have learnt” He leant forward, nose pressed to her forehead. As his warm breath tickled her forehead, the smelt of mint, sage and other herbs blessing her smell, the images and uses forming into her head. When he stepped away the knowledge didn’t cease, thrumming in her very essences. ”Brother…” she gasped, looking at Cobra’s fading figure. ”I love you, sis” he gave her one of his dashing smiles, before he simply ceased to be there. Mamba took a few steps forwards her, his tail twining with her own and his mouth pressing to her ear. He whispered so quietly it was like he was afraid the wind was listening ”And sister, make her pay” her green eyes flickered with understanding as she murmured ”Good bye, big brother” and then he was gone, the lush clearing before her. As it faded to darkness she knew that she would see this place again, that it would be in the future territory. If her newfound knowledge wasn’t proof enough, this was. _________________________________________________ The speckled molly awoke with a jerk, panting slightly. The world smelt new, she was able to finally distinguish the bitter scent of dried leaves beneath the snow. Oh how much could be taken and used from the earth! She could help her clan easily, but first…
Her sparkling gaze flicked back and forth across the clan, landing on the tabby. She had to tell her, the sooner she did the sooner she became a beacon of hope, the sooner she could serve her clan… and do the final thing her brother had asked of her. She was on her thick paws in a second, heading over with hurried paces, limping slightly. She gently pressed her nose to the molly's shoulder "Vipernose" She dipped her head respectfully at her. "I have something to tell you!" Her tail lashing back and forth.

VipernoseThe deputy awoke from her dreamless sleep to a nose in her fur. At first, she thought it was a stranger, poking around for something. With a sharp inhale, she jumped to her feet, backing away, her claws unsheathed. She tried her best to hide her wince… She had to admit, these wounds hurt bad. As her eyes adjusted to the light snow and the darkness of the beginning of dawn, she slowly relaxed as she realized it wasn’t a stranger, but one of the rogues. The she-cat greeted her quite excitedly, and Vipernose wondered what she was so eager to say. The tabby recognized the outsider as the female who had helped in the fox attack, and Vipernose couldn’t hold back a warm smile in greeting. This rogue was brave and very loyal… She deserved Vipernose’s respect. The smile faded as she realized she didn’t know this cat’s name, and she wished she had asked sometime before now.The black and silver feline had overheard the female talking with another cat along the journey, and she was pretty sure that this cat’s name was Fern. Better safe than sorry. “Good morning,” she meowed. “Your name is Fern, correct? I’m sorry if I’m wrong, I need to get better at learning cats’ names!” She chuckled quietly and then yawned, dipping her head down politely to cover it. Vipernose looked back up at Fern, bringing herself a little closer so they could keep quiet and not wake the other cats. “What do you need? Would you like to go somewhere more private?” The ShadowClan molly’s amber eyes were kind, hiding the slightly worried expression. What if someone was in trouble? Or worse, someone had died? What if this was a trap the rogues had planned? Something told her that everything was going to be fine, but Vipernose wasn’t one to trust random feelings from who knows where. _____________________________________________

death doesn't discriminate
Fern’s large paws shuffled in the snow as plain flashed across the deputy’s face. She wanted to help her but that could wait. ”Yeah, It’s Fern” Her green eyes flickering slightly in amusement ”I won’t take up much of your time, I wouldn’t have even woken you up but I thought I should tell you straight away”
”And I feel like we should go somewhere more private” She scanned the dozing clan before retreating a couple of paces out of ear shot. Once they had settled down she debated on the best way to tell the deputy. Who knew if Vipernose would even believe her? Maybe a bit of history would help.
”Before I tell you the news I think I should tell you a bit about myself… When I was a kit I used to be in Shadowclan. My name was Raccoonpaw, at least for a few moons before I was chased out of the clan. I wasn’t chased out of the clan by a leader or anything, but I’m guessing it was someone with a personal vendetta against me.” Fern tried her best not to lie, but she was now. She knew who had chased her out but it was a personal matter. ”My two brothers, Cobrapaw and Mambapaw died when we were chased out” She once would have sounded bitter about it, but after seeing them again she felt like a weight had been lifted. ”For some reason only my foster sister, Bluepaw, made it back to the clan and wasn’t hurt again, However I didn't feel like it was safe and found a place to stay as a rogue.” After being chased out of the clan she had fuelled all her anger and sadness to getting Bluepaw back. She wouldn’t hurt Bluepaw herself, but she would hurt someone she loved. Just so the blue molly knew what it felt like to experience never-ending loss. She couldn't help back think back to the cold, harsh night.

”Blue, please don’t” the scared mewling came from beneath the shaking apprentice. The blue furred cat had pinned her much larger older brother, her limbs aching at the effort. fern didn’t dare to breath, in fear her foster-sisters anger would turn on her. the silent tears flowed from her eyes down her face, highlighting the dark markings down her face. cobrapaw was already dead by the rogue that was goading bluepaw on.
it turned out that bluepaw didn’t need much convincing though, and she brought her claws down upon the tabby. it wasn’t a clean swipe, angled right to not kill him straight away but make him choke on his own blood. fern held back the strangled scream, taking a step backwards. bluepaw had always been smarter them then, had played on their arrogance. it had ended in her brothers death and it might end in hers if she didn’t get the hell out of here

As she jerked out of the memory she realised she had been staring at the ground and murmured an apology. She then took a moment to regroup her thoughts "This is not what I came here to do but I realise now there is no point telling you, if I haven't even asked to join back officially."
She dipped her head once more "Vipernose, may I join Shadowclan as an official member?"

VipernoseThe deputy laughed. “No, no,” Vipernose said kindly. “Don’t worry about me. I should get in the habit of waking up earlier than the others.” She was very curious what Fern wanted to say; her tiredness forgotten. She followed the freckled female to a more closed off area and sat down across from her. She was alert and listening closely, ready for anything that came out of Fern’s mouth. As the she-cat launched into a small backstory of herself, Vipernose tried to remember. She felt like she had known of a Raccoonpaw back then, but she couldn’t be sure. The names of her brothers didn’t seem to ring a bell, but she was sure if she saw them, she would know who they were. So Fern and Bluepaw were sisters? Vipernose never knew the blue she-cat had any siblings, foster or not. She wasn’t going to hide it; she felt bad for the rogue. She knew what loss felt like, and it was the worst thing any cat could ever go through. The tabby knew Fern was remembering a certain night when she gazed down at her paws, and then snapped her head back up to Vipernose. She accepted the apology with a flick of her tailtip. As the brown feline asked to rejoin, the deputy almost blurted her answer. Of course she would let Fern come back. The stronger ShadowClan was, the better, and who knows… Maybe she would change the clan for the better. “You don’t have to act so formal around me, I don’t see myself as superior to you. We are all equal here.” Vipernose’s straight face widened into a grin. “And, yes, of course you can rejoin! I’d love to have you back as would the rest of ShadowClan!” She thought over her next statement, making sure she was totally sure of what she wanted for Fern. “But before anything else, you need your warrior name. I’m sure you went through enough training back in the day and in the city, and I trust that you know how to act your age.” The tabby winked, holding back her smirk. “Would you like me to give you your name now or do you need to tell me what you need to first?” Vipernose raised a brow, wondering what her answer would be. _____________________________________________

death doesn't discriminate
Fern’s large paws shuffled in the snow as plain flashed across the deputy’s face. She wanted to help her but that could wait. The nervous bubble in her chest loosened with a relieved exhale. Vipernose was one of those dream deputies. One that was down to the earth, fair and didn’t have an ulterior motive. ”Then I’d love to be a member of your clan” Vipernose’s immediate acceptance was like a sign. A sign that everything would be okay and that Vipernose would believe her. The tabby seemed like a reasonable person, someone who would believe her.
Then her moment came. Becoming a warrior. Ever since she was a kit she had dreamed of it. She had imagined it, the glory. Even though being a warrior would be a fleeting few minutes, in the eyes of Vipernose, she would honour it. Getting her warrior name was even more important to her then becoming a warrior. She had gone from Raccoonpaw to Fern and had lost all respect for herself and from everyone she meet.
At the wink Fern gave her a nervous but content smile ”Living in the city is not like living in the clan and what I learnt was different but I think it equals up to a training as an apprentice” Unlike her foster sister Fern was mature and she didn’t spit out curses at every possible moment she got. ”The rest of my life will be spent serving the clan, but I think I deserve this moment before I start serving”
She was ready and she wanted it.

VipernoseVipernose watched Fern exhale, and she knew that the brown female was finally comfortable. That was good; every time some cat came to talk to the tabby, they showed her an overwhelming amount of respect… Not that she didn’t want any respect at all, she just didn’t want too much of it. Fern looked ready to become a member of ShadowClan again, and Vipernose was all for her enthusiasm. Vipernose never thought she would be naming a cat as a warrior of her clan, but here she was. She had no idea what to say, even with all those moons of naming ceremonies for her clanmates. She knew that StarClan should give her the words… Theoretically. Being that the deputy didn’t exactly believe in them changed things. The molly was glad to see that Fern was so ready for this, but she was overjoyed to see the excitement in the freckled female’s eyes. That burning eagerness was something Vipernose had always looked forward to when it was her time to become a warrior, but by the time it was her turn, her life had turned upside down and went into a downwards spiral of depression. She could remember nothing from her naming ceremony. Not even the cheers as her clanmates called her new name. She was pretty sure they didn’t even call it out once… But that was the past, and this was the present. It was Fern’s time to shine, not hers.Vipernose nodded. She could imagine the enormous differences between clan and city life, but she was sure Fern wouldn’t lie to her about something like that. The tabby loved the other female’s courage, and she knew that Fern was ready. She would be a bold, strong warrior with a loving, kind heart. The deputy was sure the two would become very close. And then it was time. “I call upon my ancestors and Fern’s to honor her outstanding bravery and touching kindheartedness,” she began, looking into Fern’s eyes instead of up at the sky. There was no one up there anyway. “By the power vested in me, I, Vipernose, Deputy of ShadowClan, give this cat her warrior name. She has proved her dedication and loyalty to this clan, and she is ready for these new responsibilities. From this moment on, she shall be known as…” she trailed off, realizing that she hadn’t thought of a name yet. She pondered the subject for a moment, and then she knew. “Ferntrail.” The deputy dipped her head in respect, allowing the moment to sink in. A few heartbeats later, Vipernose looked up and smiled. “Welcome to ShadowClan, Ferntrail.” _____________________________________________

death doesn't discriminate It was weird, no amount of dreaming could amount to this moment. Her perception had been limited to made up emotion, and here in the spot everything was so amplified. She knew that no matter how old she grew she would remember every detail. From the snow that heavily dusted the ground, and the trees that swayed above her. The ecstasy from this moment was unlike any other and she doubted she would ever be able to replicate it, so she tried her best to absorb it.
She also had to fight hard to hear past the buzzing in her ear. Listen, Fern, listen. You can’t miss this. trying to argue with her body was pointless but as she slowed her heart she managed to catch the words. The words she had been dreaming of since she left the clans, the words she had recited every night to keep them close to her heart, and remember what they were.
”I call upon my ancestors and Fern’s to honour her outstanding bravery and touching kindheartedness” As the tabby gazed into her eyes, the freckled female felt guilt for the first time. What would everyone think if they learnt she had her own agenda? They might not have cared, if her agenda hadn’t been to destroy one of their kin, to be evil and malicious. However she managed to convince herself that it was fine, she was not a tyrant. She was not in a position of power and as long as she healed the clan to the best of ability she couldn’t be held accountable for anything.
Then she was swept away with a blur of emotion and words, Fern ready for this overwhelming longing to be satisfied ”By the power vested in me, I, Vipernose, Deputy of Shadowclan, give this cat her warrior name. She has proved her dedication and loyalty to this clan, and she is ready for these new responsibilities. From this moment on she shall be known as…’ Fern had thought long and hard about what she had wanted to be called and had came up with nothing. She trusted Vipernose to understand her enough to give her a name that would suit her.
Just like that, the moment peaked Ferntrail Her eyes widened in wonder as she mouthed her name. It ran across her tongue like velvet,it was perfect. It suited her like Raccoonpaw hadn’t and it felt like something she could identify as. As Vipernose welcomed her to Shadowclan as Ferntrail, she dipped her large head.
”Thank you, Vipernose. I’ll make sure to honor these vows and serve the clan the best of my ability”
