I said Hey look Ma, I made it.
"How could he do that?" Came the angry voice of Owlpaw as the tabby loudly voiced his thoughts and concerns to his friend, Maplepaw. Having finally admitted to himself how agitated the whole situation with Fallenfox and Mushroomstar made him, Owlpaw had invited the she-cat to take a walk with him while the majority of the Clans stopped to rest. His reasoning, you ask? To "clear his head". For now, however, the autumn hued she-cat was at his mercy.
"I mean come on! He was supposed to be our leader, Maplepaw, and he just up and drops us when what, the going gets rough?" Clearly angry and confused, Owlpaw continued his ranting. "And at such a critical part of the journey too! Marigoldpelt just died for god’s sake, and Fallensta-" Owlpaw sighed in irritation. "And Fallenfox has given Mushroombelly the very thing he's been after this whole time!" The fur along the Shadowclanners spine rose as smoke practically bellowed out from his ears.
"To claim Shadowclan as his own when he can't even properly lead his own fucking mess," He growled low in poorly suppressed anger. "And no one, not a single Shadowclanner stood up to him! I mean, what the fuck?" Turing his hate-filled gaze onto Maplepaw, Owlpaw practically spat his question at her.
"What has Shadowclan become?" 219 words

Anything that is beautiful, people want to break.
--- Maplepaw had been invited on a bit of walk by her best friend, Owlpaw, and she was enjoying spending time with him, even if he was... going off the walls just a bit. She smiled apologetically at every huff or mention of some unfairness that had happened to the clan that they both loved so much. "Owlpaw, I couldn't tell you what Shadowclan has become... I'm only just starting to be able to process it myself. These are some strange times we're living in, that's for sure."
---The calico she-cat sighed and furrowed her brows, nudging against the tom's side with the top of her head and threading herself under his chin. "I'm sure Mushroomstar wouldn't do anything to outright hurt the clans, even if you don't like the way he does things." She sighed, flicking her tail just a bit. "Plus, we're just apprentices. Theres really nothing much we can do about our situation... Especially with Fallenfox no longer our leader. we don't have any kind of representation, and Windclan basically has all the power."

I said hey look Ma, I made it.
Owlpaw felt his body stiffen for a moment as Maplepaw brushed against him, but as the she-cat traveled along his side and under his chin, all the built-up tension in his body went with her. Gently lifting his chin to make room for Maplepaw as she settled under him, a heavy sigh escaped Owlpaws lips as he closed his eyes in an attempt to ignore the headache building behind his eyes. "He might not hurt the Clans himself, but who knows what else we could find out here." As he spoke, the overwhelming anger began to leave the toms voice as he settled down slightly. He wasn't angry at Maplepaw, and he didn't want to take his anger out on her.
"I don't think you're getting what I'm saying," Owlpaw meowed with only a slight hint of frustration still in his voice. "It's not that I don't like the way he runs his Clan, though you're right, I don't," Owlpaw paused to take a deep breath. "Windclan can deal with their own issues, my problem is that if Mushroomstar gets his paws on Shadowclan he isn't going to risk his life for ours. He wants power, but he gets it by being intimidating rather than earning it." Wrinkling his nose in disgust, Owlpaw added, "I've seen it before in the city, but I stupidly thought Clan cats were above throwing away another cats life for their own personal gain."
Owlpaw subconsciously began to dig his claws into the snow as their conversation continued. "Just apprentices," the tabby growled under his breath. "Yet look at us, over a year old and still treated like kittens." Glaring at nothing in particular, Owlpaw lashed his tail. "There are rogues who have joined our ranks and gotten their warrior names before us. Why should we still have to wait?" 305 words

Why should we have to wait?
The question rattled around in Maplepaw's head. She stared off into the trees for a moment, images flitting just behind her eyes as she blinked in the light gleaming through the snow covered treetops. Suddenly, Maplepaw shot up, amber eyes bright and wide, present one again. Grinning from ear to ear, the molly mewed. "We shouldn't wait! Who can tell us we can't have our warrior names? Our leader?" Maplepaw hopped and skipped around Owlpaw, her tail brushing across him nose before she stopped in front of him and ran herself along his jaw and the length of his body affectionately. "Let's become warriors. Today."

I said hey look Ma, I made it.
Taken aback by Maplepaws sudden surge of energy, Owlpaw fixed his friend with a confused stare and a raised brow as he watched as the she-cat pranced about. Opening his jaw to ask just what she was suggesting, the tabby tom was cut off by Maplepaw once again advancing on him and running the length of her body across his. With quivering whiskers, Owlpaw flexed his claws as he felt the fur along his spine tingle. Why did he feel so nervous all of a sudden? Surely it wasn't from the idea of becoming a warrior today, that's what he wanted, wasn't it?
Clearing his throat, Owlpaw creased his brow in a thoughtful manner. "I mean, I hear what you're saying," The Shadowclanner meowed in an inquiring tone. "But doesn't not having a leader raise the same issue? I still remember when Pumpkinstar gave me my apprentice name, and that's the only Clan ceremony I have for reference." The tom turned his gaze to look at Maplepaw and suddenly felt a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach at the very thought of seeing her with a disappointed expression from his response. Putting on his best goofy grin, Owlpaw waved one paw.
"I mean... I'm not saying I'm against this idea. I just don't know how we'd go about making it happen. Do you have any ideas?" 228 words

Maplepaw stopped and quizzically tipped her head, the small tufts at the ends of her ears flopping to the side. Her eyebrows furrowed as she paused. That would be a problem....
Straightening back up and hopping slightly on white-tipped paws, she grinned ear to ear and chirped. "I know the words!! I've been listening to ceremonies since I was born!" The calico she cat flicked the tip of her fluffy tail and looked around before hopping onto a nearby log that stuck out from the snow and raising her head. "Even if we may get it a little wrong, Starclan will hear them and know what we mean in our hearts!"
She paused, blinking down at the tom and letting her wild grin soften into a gentle smile. "Wouldn't you like to become a warrior with me?~"

I said hey look Ma, I made it.
Owlpaw had to bite his tongue to hold back the snicker as he watched Maplepaw suddenly come to a complete stop and tilt her head like a confused puppy. She was honestly adorable when she acted this way, she was so carefree and innocent and... wait. What the fuck did he just say?
The tan tabby was grateful when Maplepaw suddenly burst with excitement once more, as her cheerful voiced dragged his thoughts away from his mental slip-up he had just had. She claimed she knew the words, or at least most of them, but Owlpaw couldn't help but wonder if it would really count. It was true that Owlpaw didn't exactly believe in Starclan, as he was born an outsider with no religious upbringing, but... if they really weren't real, why would it matter if a leader or your friend gave you your new name?
Owlpaw felt the fur along his back bristle slightly as Maplepaw fixed him with gentle eyes and a soft smile, and the sing-song voice she spoke her next phrase was almost enough to turn the cheeks on his face bright red. What was wrong with him today? Get yourself together, Owlpaw!
"Of course I do!" The Shadowclan apprentice meowed in a voice that was just slightly too loud. Reeling himself in, Owlpaw rose to his paws and padded closer to Maplepaw before settling in the snow in front of the log. "Okay," he meowed in a voice full of his usual confidence. "If you think Starclan would be alright with it, let's do it! ... But doesn't this mean we have to choose each other names?" 271 words

Maplepaw lowered her head slightly in a gentle nod. "I trust you to choose my name. I've trusted you with my life before, a name is nothing compared with that." The calico female stretched her neck forward and slipped a bit, regaining her posture quickly, but still looking a bit confused as to how in the world she could possibly slip. Like that's never happened before, right? Giggling to herself, the tiny she cat stood up straight and clicked her teeth together. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather for a meeting!" She called out, her voice ringing through the otherwise silent air, hanging for a moment before dissipating into the snow.

I said hey look Ma, I made it.
"I trust you to choose my name. I've trusted you with my life before, a name is nothing compared with that."
Mint green eyes stretched wide as Maplepaw put her trust in him into words, and all Owlpaw could do in response was stare dumbly at the she-cat before him. If he was lucky, Maplepaw might confuse his pure shock as stemming from the slip she just had, rather than the words that fell from her lips. Truthfully, Owlpaw was a bit too in his own head to really notice the clumsy action, but he wasn't about to admit that right now. It was only when Maplepaw began the familiar chant did Owlpaw blink and straighten his spine, giving his chest fur a few sweeps of his tongue as if he had to be clean and presentable to their non-existent audience.
Owlpaw lifted his head to gaze upon Maplepaws face as the she-cat played leader, waiting an ample amount of time as if her warriors would gather around her. Owlpaw figured she was just using this time to think of a suitable name, but Owlpaw found it hard to fight off the urge to gesture for his friend to continue with a wave of his paw. He had no idea what name the autumn-hued she-cat would pick for him, but knowing it came from her would make it special. Whatever it was, Owlpaw would wear it with pride. 238 words

Amber eyes flashed as she blinked down at the tabby tom. She smiled sweetly and crouched down, hopping down next to Owl.... What? Owl. What. She looked him up and down, bringing up a small paw and pressing it against his chest. Maplepaw lowered her paw once again and raised her head to look her friend in the eye. "I, Maplepaw of Shadowclan, call upon my ancestors to look down on this Apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of ..." She paused, forgetting the words for a moment. Her mind went blank. And then they came back. "your noble code, and I .. commend him to you as a warrior in his turn." Maplepaw gazed at Owlpaw and blinked with gentle amber eyes. "I trust you will defend the clan with your life."
"By the power of Starclan, I give you your warrior name. Owlpaw, from this moment on, you will be known as Owlscreech. Starclan honors your courage, honor, and unwavering faithfulness to your clan and those you love. I welcome you as a full warrior of Shadowclan." Maplepaw stretched her neck forward, brushing her cheek against the tom's and licking his shoulder gently. "A full warrior. You're gonna be amazing, Owlscreech. I know it."

I said hey look Ma, I made it.
Owlpaw sat perfectly still as Maplepaw looked him up and down, the loud thumping of his heart only growing more intense due to the sweet looks Maplepaw was shooting his way. His breath caught momentarily in his throat when Maplepaw placed a delicate paw on his chest, only for her to lock her gaze onto his a moment later, the look in her eye seems to say "I know what to do now."
A shiver shot down Owlpaws spine as Maplepaw began to chant the words usually only spoken by leaders. Even when she paused, the she-cat quickly resumed her words with just as much passion as before. At that moment, Owlpaw couldn't imagine his warrior ceremony going any other way. He wanted it to be done this way, and nothing Fallenfox could have done would have been as special as this.
When Maplepaw declared his new name, the tabby tom released a breath he hadn't even known he was holding. The name reverberated through his ears a few times as Owlpaw- no, Owlscreech raised his head a little higher. Mint eyes closed for a moment as Maplepaw brushed her cheek against his, and when he opened them again, Owlscreech locked his gaze onto Maplepaws yellow ones.
With a purr, the tabby tom rose from the ground and brushed himself against Maplepaw. "I know," he responded with a playful smile. His muzzle briefly brushed against Maplepaws ear, where he meowed a soft "Thank you." before padding closer to the log Maplepaw had stood on, his fluffy tail swishing through the air behind him.
Climbing atop the log, Owlscreech turned to face Maplepaw. Giving her a smile, Owlscreech spoke again. "Are you ready, Maplepaw?" 283 words

Maplepaw shivered, excitement pounding in her ears and warming her cheeks. With the new name, Owlscreech seemed to have gotten an air of authority to him. It was probably all in her head, but he seemed to stand a bit taller than before. He looked.. amazing. Butterflies fluttered in her stomach and rabbit fluff filled her head. This moment couldn't be any better, though.
She was going to be a warrior. With no one but her best friend at her side.
"Yes, I'm ready."

I said hey look Ma, I made it.
With Maplepaws conformation, Owlscreech nodded and began exactly as the she-cat had only moments before. "I, Owlscreech of Shadowclan, call upon my ancestors to look down on this apprentice," As he spoke his new name, the young Shadowclan warrior felt a smile grow on his face. His eyes sparkled with joy as he gazed at his friends face, and he couldn't deny the way his chest tightened just seeing how happy she was. "She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn."
As Owlscreech continued reciting the ancient ceremony, he couldn't help but notice the way faint sunlight bathed Maplepaw in light. She practically glowed under the suns warm touch, and Owlscreech felt his face heat up slightly the longer he looked at her. "I trust you will defend the clan with your life." Taking a moment to just breathe, the tabby tom ran through some names in his head, trying to find one that would sound just right. He wanted to give her a strong name, because although she could be a bit... ditzy at times, Owlscreech knew how strong she really was. Not just any cat could remain so cheerful and optimistic during such hard times.
"By the power of Starclan, I give you your warrior name. Maplepaw, from this moment on, you will be known as Maplefang." Smiling wider now, Owlscreech felt the familiar rapid thumping of his heart, although this time it wasn't from his excitement to receive his warrior name. No, this time it was due to the realization of how beautiful Maplefang was. How had he not seen it before? Without skipping a bet, Owlscreech felt as his eyes dropped slightly as he practically melted under the she-cats gaze. "Starclan honors your courage, honor, and unwavering faithfulness to your clan and those you love. I welcome you as a full warrior of Shadowclan."
As his words came to an end, Owlscreech lept off the log and next to Maplefang, where he gently touched his nose to the new warriors. He smiled widely at her, taking in the sight of her during this moment as he never wanted to forget it. He saw Maplefang differently now, and he couldn't believe he had been blind to his true feelings this whole time. He had a really, really big fucking crush on Maplefang, but right now he couldn't find it in him to worry about it. Everything was so... perfect right now.
Clearing his throat, Owlscreech gave a small laugh at his own realization. "So... how did I do?" 437 words

Maplefang's amber eye's glowed in amusement at the tom's repetition of his own strengths... but she silently vowed to exhibit those strengths as well in the future. They were as much a part of her now as the pelt on her back. The sun shone through the bare branches above them and down onto the she-cat's calico fur, glittering off of it as if in a dream. And she took a gentle step forward, those deep amber pools swimming with a newfound emotion she couldn't name. A mixture of hope, admiration, amusement, happiness, and even love for this tom.
In that moment he had seemed to come into his own. A natural leader, in a sense. "You did amazing, just as I expected." She smiled sweetly, tufted ears pricked and tail tip twitching. "Owlscreech and Maplefang, huh?"
"I like these new names already"

I said hey look Ma, I made it.
As Maplefang advanced on him, Owlscreech had the strange sensation that he could only describe as feeling like a snake had slithered its way into his ribcage and promptly curled tightly around his heart, squeezing mercilessly. It was a rather unpleasant feeling, and Owlscreech hoped like hell this wasn't a side effect of having a crush.
A joyful laugh escaped the tabby toms mouth at Maplefangs praise. He wasn't sure what he expected from the she-cat, for even if he had fucked the entire thing up, she probably wouldn't have the heart to tell him that. "Thanks, Maplefang... I think the names are fitting, though I can't help but wonder what made you decide on 'screech'." Narrowing his eyes in a playful manner, Owlscreech shoved his friend with his shoulder before booking it across the snow.
"Just wait until Bluepaw hears that I've become a warrior before her!" The tom practically shouted into the otherwise quiet forest. "She's going to be piiissed! I'll have to blame it all on you to save my own ass!" And with that, Owlscreech continued his jaunt through the forest, following the paw prints they left in the snow, the sound of his laughter echoing through the trees. 203 words
