we were careless, we were reckless, time was precious
young and so bold, we'd never get old Originally Otterkit had decided that he wanted to be a kit, that he wanted to be cuddled and looked after for the rest of his life. Now, in this brilliant new territory with the ability only to sneak outside with any merciful cats was making him go crazy. He wanted to become an apprentice now, so he was! He didn’t want to sleep in the nursery with pregnant cats, they were gross and always yelled at him.
Otterkit wanted a mentor, Otterkit wanted to become an apprentice and he was about to go whine at Owlscreech until he got exactly what he wanted. His thick paws slapped the ground with an ominously loud sound as he made a beeline for where Owlscreech was. Hah! He didn’t even have to go into his den to confront him! Perfect timing seemed to be something the world gave Otterkit, Owlscreech coming into the clearing gave him the opportunity to bound forward and then smash into the tabby.
”Owlscreech” he yowled into his ear, ending up bearing hugging his chest with his mouth right by the sensitive ear tufts. ”It’s me, Otterkit!” After another attempt to completely deafen the tom he let go, falling onto the ground with an ‘oof’ He then twisted around and onto his paws ”Except I’m not gonna be Otterkit anymore, aren’t I? I’m gonna be Otterpaw, righttt!”
A grin twisted onto his lips as he stared up at Otterkit with those wide, innocent orange eyes. Even after her had harassed Owlscreech’s ears it was so hard to say no to that pure, lovable face.

A blue tabby kit looked up, hearing lots of yelling. At first she thought someone'd stepped on a kitten and it was screaming, but she quickly recognized OtterKit. She couldn't help it as a smile spread on her lips, and she scrambled out of the tiny leaf pile she'd made to nap in. InkKit mewled and ran over, flopping against OwlScreech, thinking it was some kind of game as he flopped against the tom's side, "Hi!" L

I said hey look Ma, I made it.
Just as Owlscreech had stepped off the last rock that led up to his den, a bolt of energy hit him directly in his ribcage. Startled, the Shadowclan leader felt his fur spike along his spine as his normally whip-like tail grew two sizes larger. Due to the sudden impact, Owlscreech staggered sideways as the large creature that pelted into him lurched forward and attached itself to his chest, effectively causing Owlscreech to trip over the weight that dangled between his front legs. Grunting as he crashed into the dirt, he quickly realized his attacker was none other than Otterkit, as the large kitten had wiggled up his body and was now shouting into his ear. Directly into his ear. He winced as the ringing in his ear began to subside, grateful that Otterkit had slid off his body and into the dirt next to him.
Fumbling onto his paws, Owlscreech shook his head in an attempt to banish the ache in his ears entirely. "Yes, yes, hello Otterkit," the tan tabby meowed at first, having not yet processed the younger tabbies question. Finally focusing his eyes on Otterkits face, Owlscreech stilled for a few moments as the question finally seemed to reach his ears. "Oh- yes, of course! You're over six moons old now, aren't you?" He replied in a friendly tone, his eyes narrowing in mock suspicion. "You wouldn't lie about your age to Shadowclans new leader, would you? Just because I'm new to power doesn't mean you can trick me, Otterkit!" Playfully swiping a paw at Otterkits ears, Owlscreech was able to keep his balance as a second cat came barreling into him, but this time with much less strength and determination to knock him down. He shifting his attention to Inkkit immediately, allowing a mrrow of laughter to escape his lips and substitute a greeting.
"I think you're both well overdue for your apprentice ceremonies," Owlscreech responded as he bunched up his muscles and leaped out of the two overgrown kits reach. Landing on the soft grass a tail-length away, Owlscreech shot them a glance over his shoulder. "If I try to send the pair of you back into the nursery when Bluebell has her kittens, she'll tear me to shreds! What do you say, Inkkit, are you ready to become an apprentice with Otterkit?" 389 words

VipernoseA loud guffaw could be heard from across the clearing, and whoever stopped to stare would see that the noise belonged to none other than their own deputy. Yes, it was very unladylike, but since when was the molly known for elegance? Amber eyes glinted with laughter as gray paws padded towards the three cats that she found quite funny.
Vipernose wasn't usually one to intervene in anyone's conversations, but she had to get in on the fun this time. And besides, maybe she could make it clear to her leader who she thought should be Otterkit's mentor... But for now, she would poke at some fun.
"Hey, now, Otterkit," she meowed, almost snorting as she reached Owlscreech, Inkkit, and her favorite apprentice-aged brown and gold tabby tom. "Leave poor Owlscreech alone. He's still getting used to his job; too distracted to think about two young cats ambushing him." She shot a look at the young tan tabby, holding back a wide, foolish grin. Then she added, "Great strategy, though, you two."
She had forgotten how much she loved teasing cats over the long, four moon journey. But now they had gotten to their destination, and she decided that she was deprived of happiness. And now she was craving it.
With a stifled smile, Vipernose sat down, her tail swaying behind her. Not quite comfortable enough for the current 'situation' yet, she laid down, resting her chin on her paw, a kitty-brow raised. She was intrigued to see where this conversation would go, and she would enjoy chipping in every few sentences.
After all, the tabby she-cat was not known for elegance. _____________________________________________ You brought the flames and you put me through hell I had to learn how to fight for myself

we were careless, we were reckless, time was precious
young and so bold, we'd never get old As the new leader accused Otterkit of lying his eyes widened up. ”No! Owlscreech I’d never ever lie to you. I’m- I’m definitely over 6 moons! Around 8, I think!” Owlscreech had freaked him out so much he had started confusing himself. The fear that had pooled into his wide orange eyes dissipated as the tom playfully swiped him over the ears and he understood that Owlscreech was teasing him. ”Ooohhhh” he breathed, distracted by an incoming storm of fur.
When he realised it was Inkkit that had came hurtling over, he let out a high-pitched squeal ”Inkkit! Inkkit meet my friend Owlscreech, Owlscreech meet my best best friend Inkkit!” He jumped up and down, excited energy radiating from him. ”Inkkit is blind in one eye, look look! It’s so cool” Otterkit then proceeded to tackle Inkkit to the ground, forcing her into one great big bear hug. Otterkit only let go of her when Owlscreech mentioned they could become a ‘paw together. ”Come on Inky! Please please please say yes, I don’t wanna become an apprentice alone!” He turned his wide, innocent eyes onto her next.
Then Otterkit saw one of his most favourite she-cats in the world and let out another squeal, slamming into her. ”Vipernose! I haven’t seen you in ages!” It hadn’t even been long at all, but he missed her whenever she went off to do deputy stuff. Rubbing his face all over her legs, Vipernose became the third victim of his puppy-dog eyes. ”But Vipernose, you’ve been teaching me how to hunt and you have to admit I’m pretty awesome, don’t you want me to be an apprentice!” his lip quivering ever so slightly on the last few words.
”Plus Owlscreech doesn’t mind, he thinks I’m pretty interesting! Right, Owlscreech” giving the tom an imploring look.

InkKit yelped in surprise, giggling when she was tackled. She purred and booped her snoot to his head until he took off again. She rolled over and put a paw over her one blind eye, smiling up at OwlScreech, "It's this one! Can ya tell?" she put her paw down, the pupil clouded and faded. Her other eye shown brightly, both a yellowish green color as she shook her dusty fur and flopped back over OwlScreech's paws, purring, "I'm over 6 moons too! You goottta make us apprentices!" L

I said hey look Ma, I made it.
Amusement sparkled in Owlscreechs eyes as he stared at Otterkit. He had seen the fear that flashed onto the kittens face, but after giving him a playful whack to the ears, he seemed to understand the joke. Still, Owlscreech felt his shoulders sag slightly at the relief that came with Otterkits understanding, he didn't need an upset kitten on his paws.
As Otterkit went barreling over to Inkkit, Owlscreech couldn't hold in the laugh that escaped his lips. "I've met Inkkit before, furball. I am the leader of Shadowclan, after all. What kind of leader would I be if I didn't know every cat by name?" Seeing as this was going to go nowhere fast, Owlscreech settled himself onto his haunches as Otterkit yelled about his friend's condition, all while trying to pin her to the ground. Whoever got Otterkit as an apprentice would have their paws full. For now, though, the two soon-to-be apprentices devolved into a mass of childlike giggles.
The loud cackle of Vipernoses startled Owlscreech, even if he wouldn't admit it. He turned his green gaze onto her, his eyes slit in obvious amusement. She even teased him, which was a behavior Owlscreech hadn't seen from Shadowclans deputy in a few moons, even though Vipernose was known for being a jokester. He wondered if Vipernoses positive attitude was a sign of the she-cat overcoming her rampant depression, and if the tabby tom believed in Starclan he would be praying for that to be true. Owlscreech wasn't great at advice, and such a heavy topic would make him uncomfortable, even if he tried his best to push through it.
As Otterkit bounded away to greet Vipernose, Owlscreech returned his attention to Inkkit, who seemed to be pointed out her blind eye. He nodded his head along with her words as he gazed into the cloudy pool. "You know, Bluebell also lost vision in one of her eyes," Owlscreech meowed, although he left out the part where he had been the one who took away her eyesight. "and I'd say she's one of the strongest she-cats in the clan. Keep that in mind, okay?"
Flicking one of his torn ears as he caught the sound of his name, Owlscreech playfully rolled his eyes. "Me? Interested in the kitten who has been in my fur since the beginning of the journey?" Ownlscreech questioned, bringing one paw up to his chest. "I bet Ferntrail would be very interested if I told her I had an overgrown flea I just can't shake." 421 words

VipernoseBefore she could roll out of the way, a ball of brown fur collided with her shoulder. As he yelled a greeting in her ear, she tried not to flinch, knowing that it would hurt his feelings. She instead smiled and nodded. "Yes, yes," she meowed in reply. "I'm happy to see you too."
The deputy watched as he buried his face in the short fur on her legs, trying not to laugh aloud. Here Otterkit was, wanting to be an apprentice, yet he did not cease to act like a kit. Vipernose loved his sweet, innocent personality, though, and she couldn't get enough of it.As he stared at her with large, mischievous eyes, the tabby felt her own eyes soften. If anyone knew Vipernose, they knew she had an extremely soft spot for kits and young apprentices. If they asked her to jump off a cliff to save a little toy, she would.
Okay, maybe that was kind of a stretch.
"I do have to admit, Otterkit," she laughed. "You are pretty formidable." She wondered how far his vocabulary expanded, and whether or not he would guess what the big word meant through context. "I would be very delighted to see you as a 'paw'. And you are quite riveting."
She smirked, watching as Owlscreech and Inkkit conversed, glad to see that her leader was making new friends. The molly herself had never met Inkkit, and she figured now would be a great time to do so. She scooted closer to the other two, curious to see her one blind eye. As she settled down again, she smiled at the she-kit. "Hello, Inkkit," Vipernose meowed in a friendly tone. "I'm Vipernose. I don't think we've met before... I see that you're a friend of Otterkit's!" She glanced at the brown tom before whispering, "I think we can both agree he's a little crazy, right?" The she-cat grinned, knowing that Otterkit most likely heard what she had said.
As she sat, she noticed Owlscreech's eyes on her. They both knew that her mood had lifted since they'd gotten to their new camp, and she could see the question in his mint eyes: Are you okay now? She wanted to say yes, that she was getting over her depression, but now was just not the right time.
Vipernose laughed at the ShadowClan leader's comment directed to Otterkit. She had to admit, she was quite surprised that Owlscreech was joking around and not yelling at other cats or talking about business for once. She had never seen this side of her leader, but now that she had, she decided that she liked it. She could enjoy the authoritative side of him every once in awhile, but this side of him was more laid back and positive. More likable.
Vipernose looked at the three cats, an indescribable feeling in her chest. She was the deputy of these cats and their clan, and she couldn't be more honored to get to know each and every one of them; to be looked up to, to be respected. This was the clan she fell in love with when her mother was still at her side, and she couldn't be happier because of it.

we were careless, we were reckless, time was precious
young and so bold, we'd never get old ”Your a very good leader, Owlscreech!” Otterkit chirped, an easy-going smile on his lips. Just like the kit had praised Owlscreech, one of his most looked up to she-cat was praising him. He was formidable! Formidable? He wasn’t exactly sure what formidable meant, looking up at Vipernose with confusing. He had heard the word before, but associated with what? Ahah! One of the times they had stopped for a break on the journey, he’d been talking to this tom and he’d called himself formidable. The tom had been really strong and had claimed to be the best fighter in the clan. Woah! Otterkit was as cool as that tom? That was pretty awesome. ”I am formidable” he repeated, puffing his chest out.
”If I did become a ‘paw, who would my mentor be?” he looked at the two high ranks with the widest eyes possible, hoping one of them would let slip who they had in mind. ”Please please not someone boring!” It didn’t really matter to him… Oh who was he kidding! He didn’t want some old mentor that always yelled at him, he wanted someone cool and that understood what being an apprentice felt like. Leaving the fate of his apprentice hood to the capable minded Owlscreech he turned to Vipernose and Inkkit, listening in to their conversation and what was that?! They mentioned him.
”Woah woah woah, I’m not crazy Vipernose!” Otterkit was the opposite of crazy. He was cool, calm and collected. The three c’s so to speak of. ”I know you're trying to bring Inkkit over to your side Vipernose but I hate to tell you that we are best friends and you can’t break that type of friendship” he told her in a matter of fact tone.
Outrage settled on the toms face as he took a step towards Owlscreech, ”A flea?!” he exclaimed, eyes wide. How dare he compare him to a.. A flea?! Otterkit was not a flea! He was the opposite of a flea, in fact. He didn’t bite everyone he met, unless he didn’t like them! ”I-If I’m a flea, then your a tick!” The bright tabby couldn’t help but burst out laughing ”O-owltick, Tickscreech, NO! Tickstar” It took the kit several minutes to remember that he was actually talking to the leader and for his giggling to stop. ”I um, I mean no disrespect Owlscreech”
”So… About that ceremony?” he looked at them with wide, pleading eyes.

The tiny blue calico couldn't help a playful grin, putting a paw to her mouth and whispering, "He's suuuper crazy" she giggled. The tom was pretty odd, and excitable, and over-enthusiastic, but it's just made him more likable! At least to InkKit, it did. "I don't care wha mentor I get. If they're mean, I'll beat 'em up!" she floofed her fur, standing up with her chest puffed out, "I'll make 'em be nice! And if they're.. uhm... a butt, then I'll be a butt back!" L

I said hey look Ma, I made it.
Owlscreech chuckled when Otterkit announced that he was doing a good job at leadership, as if the rather airheaded kitten knew what made up a good high rank, apart from agreeing with his silly ideas. "I'm glad you think so," The Shadowclan leader meowed in an amused tone, cuffing a paw behind the brown kits ear as he bounced around. "A leader is nothing without the support of his Clan behind him." Sure, that was a rather obvious statement that was rooted in common sense, but the tabby tom figured Otterkit would be excited to hear that he mattered nonetheless. Plus, as an outside born Shadowclanner, it was always a welcome reminder to know you were still fully recognized as part of the Clan. At least in Owlscreechs opinion.
The tan feline watched wild mild interest as Otterkit shot forward to intrude on Vipernoses and Inkkits conversation. Inkkit would make a fine apprentice, he thought, and would likely get along with most warriors. She appeared calm and respectful, which were highly praised traits. Otterkit... would need a steadier paw, one who would guide him with more patience and not get too agitated with his childlike personality until he matured. For example, Bluebell would be a horrific match for Otterkit, and the very thought of it brought a grin to his face. His half-sister was very lucky that she was on the brink of kitting, or Owlscreech might be more tempted to stick the excitable kitten with her, and it no way because he liked to outright piss his sister off now and then. No, it was definitely a... "life lesson" in patience.
The loud voice of Otterkit, accompanied by the angry look on his face, drew Owlscreech back to the present. Owlscreech was about to tell the tom that he had been kidding when he suddenly started laughing, firing off a few nicknames of his own, before suddenly going stock still and giving Owlscreech the most serious look he had ever seen from the young tabby. Now it was Owlscreechs turn to laugh as Otterkit swiftly apologized.
"No hard feelings, Otterkit." Owlscreech chuckled as he rose to his paws. He walked a few tail-lengths away before stopping and dramatically turning to face the group of three. "Well?" he meowed, raising one brow. "You'd better hurry if you want to get your apprentice names! I don't have all day to wait around for a couple of slow slugs!" He smiled a soft smile then, waiting for the two kittens to shoot past him and claim their spots under the Tall Rock to await the ceremony Owlscreech would dedicate to them. He knew Vipernose would be right behind them, so before she could join the kittens and their side he caught the deputies attention with a brush of his tail. "So," he meowed as he eyed Vipernose with a knowing look. "Do you want Otterkit? The kid is practically your son." 489 words

VipernoseShe smiled as he pondered her compliment, and then wider as he seemed to understand. That was one of the bigger things she liked about Otterkit... He was very good at taking things in that he didn't quite get and figuring them out in his head. A very smart, young tom.
As the brown and gold feline questioned who his mentor would be, Vipernose glanced sideways at Owlscreech, trying to make it clear to her leader that she wanted him. Maybe the tan tabby had other ideas, but the deputy knew what her final decision was.
She laughed as he demanded that he wasn't crazy and they were best friends which meant that they couldn't insult each other. She was about to reply when he got sidetracked, just like a normal cat his age.
Inkkit's words made the tabby grin... they sounded like something she would've said back in the day. Inkkit knew that she had control over her apprenticeship, it wasn't all up to whoever her mentor was. Vipernose liked that in a cat - dignity.
Owlscreech then stood and padded away toward the ledge where he held meetings, and Vipernose took that as her cue to get up. It was time for a ceremony, and she needed to confirm that Otterkit would be made her apprentice. She stood then, trailing after the two kits as they practically skipped to the Tall Rock. And it seemed that her leader wanted to talk as well, judging by how he waited for her.
The words that came out of his mouth relieved Vipernose; she wouldn't have to worry at all. Owlscreech wanted to give Otterkit to her, and she was happy with that. Instead of just agreeing, though, she chuckled, stopping in her tracks to stare at him. "My, my, Owlscreech," she said, her sarcasm painfully obvious. "You sure do enjoy breaking the rules, don't you? First, you give yourself your own warrior name. Then, you decide to become the leader of ShadowClan before you've mentored a cat. And now you're going to let a mother mentor her own son? Unbelievable. If only he were my son, right?" She smirked, wondering if he had even realized what he had offered. She then raised a kitty-brow, her smirk pulling into a grin; revealing a few teeth. "I'm in." _____________________________________________ You brought the flames and you put me through hell I had to learn how to fight for myself

we were careless, we were reckless, time was precious
young and so bold, we'd never get old Otterkit looked at Inkkit through the corner of his eyes, a small frown on his face. The last time they had truly talked was when Inkkit had found out what had happened to her dad. She had certainly bounced back and he was happy for her - but too nervous to bring it up again. If she wanted to talk, he’d help her! Like the mature, awesome dude he was. Hopefully their mentors would let them train together and if not… Well there was going to be some serious problems.
When Owlscreech made his way towards the Tall Rock, Otterkit let out a squeal. Bumping his side against Inkkit. Urging her on with another squeal he scampered past Owlscreech, making a beeline right to the spot underneath the Tall Rock. His spot, and Inkkit’s of course. Otterkit was not nervous about this, he was ready to embrace the spotlight of the ceremony and work that would come with being an apprentice...atleast he thought he was. Maybe his mentor would even teach him how to swim, surely even Shadowclanners got in the water at some point in their lives.
As Inkkit came to sit by him, he surveyed her with a proud expression. ”We deserve this, y’know” he told her, his chest swelling with pride. Even though Otterkit always acted like a child, he was the older one in this friendship and had always felt responsibility towards her. With playful swipes, he groomed all of her fur that was sticking out down.

The small blue calico squeaked when her friend nearly shoved her over, giggling and racing to join him at the bottom of the tall rocks. She leaned on him slightly, watching their leader and deputy with big, proud eyes and a smile. However when Otterkit spoke, her ears pricked, "Deserve it? What did we do to deserve this stuff?" she asked him curiously, a tad confused. Her father had always told her no one deserves anything they get, good or bad. L

I said hey look Ma, I made it.
Although the sarcasm was heavy in Vipernose's tone, Owlscreech was acutely aware of the way his eyes widened ever so slightly in surprise at her words. Now, it wasn't the teasing comments about his unofficial naming ceremony or the fact that he had never mentored a kit that caught him off guard, it was the fact that he hadn't ever heard about this rule where kin couldn't mentor kin. Otterkit wasn't Vipernose's kid by blood, so he had narrowly avoided breaking the warrior code for the... what was it now, third time in half a month?
Owlscreech was not off to a very good start.
"You really need to catch me up on all these rules," Owlscreech meowed with a hint of distress in his voice. "Just when I think I've learned it all, one of you manages to throw new information at my paws." Shaking his head in defeat, Owlscreech offered Vipernose a gentle smile to show that he really didn't blame her for anything. "Well, we better not keep those two waiting any longer, or else Otterkit might try to call the Clan together himself!"
Climbing on top of the rock ledge that jut outwards from his den, Owlscreech gave the familiar yowl to summon the Clan together. He was getting rather good at it, he thought, as the words flew from his mouth without any hesitation. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here beneath the Tall Rock for a Clan meeting!" 249 words
